I Can Help With

Are any of these familiar?

You don't have to be in crisis to seek support. Many people come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply needing a space to think clearly. If any of the following resonate, therapy could help.

😔

Persistent Sadness or Depression

Feeling low, unmotivated, or empty for weeks — struggling to enjoy things you used to love or get through daily life.

😰

Anxiety & Constant Worry

Racing thoughts, fear of the future, panic attacks, or feeling on edge even when nothing is obviously wrong.

💔

Relationship Pain

Conflict with a partner, family tension, a painful breakup, or feeling lonely even around people you love.

🧠

Trauma & Painful Memories

Past experiences that still affect your daily life — flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, or emotional numbness.

😤

Stress & Burnout

Overwhelmed by work, studies, or caregiving. Exhausted, irritable, and running on empty.

🌀

Grief & Loss

Navigating the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, job loss, or any change that has left you grieving.

🪞

Low Self-Esteem

Feeling not good enough, constantly comparing yourself to others, or struggling to set boundaries in relationships.

🧭

Life Transitions

A new job, moving city, becoming a parent, or any major change that leaves you feeling lost or uncertain.

"You don't have to have it all figured out to begin. You just have to take one step."

Common Questions

Everything you need to know

Is everything I share confidential?
Yes — absolutely. All sessions are strictly confidential and governed by the CPB Code of Ethics and the Counsellors & Psychologists Act No. 14 of 2014. The only exceptions (required by law) are immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, or a court order. These are rare and would always be discussed with you first wherever possible.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a safe, relaxed conversation — not an assessment or interrogation. Elvis will ask about what brought you in, a little about your background, and what you hope to get from therapy. There's no pressure to share everything at once. You set the pace. By the end, you'll have a rough plan for how to move forward together.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals and what you're working through. Some people find 4–6 sessions enough for a specific issue. Others benefit from longer-term work over several months. You're never locked in — you decide when you've gotten what you need, and the plan is always reviewed together.
Do you offer sliding-scale or reduced fees?
Yes. A limited number of sliding-scale slots are available for students, low-income individuals, and community referrals. Please mention your situation when booking and Elvis will do his best to accommodate you. Access to mental health support should not be determined by financial means.
Can I do online sessions from anywhere in Kenya?
Yes — Elvis offers secure, private teletherapy via Zoom and Microsoft Teams to anyone in Kenya. All you need is a stable internet connection and a private space. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person for most concerns and are offered at a slightly reduced rate.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please give at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice may incur a 50% session fee. Life happens — Elvis understands, and exceptions are made for genuine emergencies. Just communicate as early as possible via WhatsApp or call.
Is therapy the same as talking to a friend?
Not quite. A therapist offers a structured, confidential, non-judgmental space with clinical training and evidence-based tools. Unlike a friend, Elvis has no personal investment in the outcome, won't share your information, and uses professional frameworks to help you gain insight and create real, lasting change.
Do you work with children or teenagers?
Yes. Elvis works with adolescents and young people from age 12 upwards. Sessions for minors require parental/guardian consent, and parents may be involved in parts of the process. For children under 12, Elvis can provide guidance and referrals to specialists in child psychology.

Mental Health in Kenya: Breaking the Silence

Cultural expectations, stigma, and a lack of accessible services keep many Kenyans suffering in silence. It doesn't have to be this way.

5 Signs You Might Benefit from Therapy

Self-Awareness · 4 min read · By Elvis Macharia Migwi

There's a common misconception that therapy is only for people who are "broken" or in crisis. In reality, therapy is a powerful tool for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, cope more effectively, or navigate a difficult season of life.

1. Your emotions feel overwhelming or out of control

If you find yourself reacting strongly to situations — crying unexpectedly, feeling rage that seems disproportionate, or swinging between highs and lows — your nervous system may be asking for support. In my work with clients across Kirinyaga and online, this is one of the most common presentations. A therapist helps you understand the roots of these reactions and build lasting tools to regulate them.

2. Something from the past keeps showing up in your present

Old wounds — whether from childhood, a past relationship, or a traumatic event — have a way of surfacing in unexpected places. If patterns keep repeating despite your best efforts, therapy can help you process what's underneath.

3. Your relationships are suffering

Conflict, distance, or an inability to be vulnerable in close relationships are often signals that something internal needs attention. Therapy helps you understand your attachment patterns and communicate more effectively.

4. You're coping in ways that aren't serving you

Alcohol, overworking, social withdrawal, or other avoidance behaviours are often signs that you're managing pain without actually addressing it. Therapy offers a healthier, sustainable alternative.

5. You feel stuck

Sometimes there's no dramatic crisis — just a persistent sense that life isn't moving forward. This is one of the most common and most treatable presentations in therapy.

If any of these resonate, the next step is simply a conversation. Book a session here.

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Getting Started · 3 min read · By Elvis Macharia Migwi

Starting therapy is a brave step — and it's completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more at ease.

It's a conversation, not an assessment

The first session is not about being diagnosed or judged. I'll simply have a warm, open conversation about what brought you in, a little about your life and background, and what you're hoping for from therapy. You set the pace — share as little or as much as you're comfortable with.

You won't be asked to fix everything in one hour

Real change happens over time, through a relationship built on safety and consistency. Don't worry about having all the answers.

There may be some basic questions

Expect questions like: What's brought you to therapy now? How long have you been feeling this way? What does a good outcome look like for you? These help shape our work together.

You'll leave with a sense of direction

By the end, we'll have a shared understanding of what you're working on and a rough plan for how to approach it.

Online vs. in-person: what's the difference?

Very little, in practice. Both are equally effective for most concerns. Online sessions via Zoom or Teams offer the same quality of care with added flexibility and privacy.

Mental Health in Kenya: Breaking the Silence

Culture & Stigma · 5 min read · By Elvis Macharia Migwi

Mental health in Kenya is surrounded by layers of silence — cultural, familial, religious, and systemic. Many people suffer quietly for years, not because help doesn't exist, but because asking for help carries a stigma that can feel heavier than the pain itself.

The cultural landscape

In many Kenyan communities, emotional struggles are seen as personal weakness or a private family matter. Men in particular face enormous pressure to appear strong and self-sufficient. Phrases like "just pray about it" — though well-intentioned — often leave people feeling more alone. I hear this regularly from clients I work with in Kirinyaga and online across Kenya.

The cost of silence

Untreated mental health conditions don't disappear — they deepen. Depression that goes unsupported can erode relationships, career performance, and physical health. Trauma that isn't processed often resurfaces in ways that affect entire families across generations.

Things are changing

A growing number of Kenyans — especially younger generations — are starting to challenge the stigma. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many to confront mental health challenges they could no longer ignore. And access to qualified, culturally-grounded therapists is slowly expanding beyond Nairobi.

Seeking help is not weakness — it's intelligence

No one would be ashamed of seeing a doctor for a broken bone. Mental pain is no different — it is real, it has causes, and it responds to treatment. If you're Kenyan, struggling, and wondering whether therapy is "for people like you" — it is. I offer sessions in both English and Swahili, with deep respect for Kenyan cultural values and lived experience.

Start the conversation today — confidentially and without judgment. Book a session.
